Neymar Returns to Brazil Squad for 2026 FIFA World Cup

Brazil have officially named Neymar Jr in their 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the superstar forward’s return to the national team after almost two-and-a-half years away.

New Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed the squad in Rio de Janeiro, with Neymar receiving the biggest reaction from fans during the announcement. The 34-year-old forward last played for Brazil in October 2023 before suffering a serious ACL injury that sidelined him for a long period.

Despite ongoing concerns over his fitness and recurring injury problems, Ancelotti said Neymar earned his place after showing steady improvement in recent months.

“We evaluated Neymar throughout the season and noticed that he has been playing consistently and improving physically,” Ancelotti said during the squad announcement.

Neymar’s selection sparked major debate across Brazil due to his injury history and inconsistent performances since returning to Santos. After difficult spells with injuries at Al Hilal and later Santos, many questioned whether the veteran attacker was physically ready for the intensity of a World Cup campaign.

However, Neymar’s experience and leadership played a major role in the decision. The Brazilian icon remains the country’s all-time top scorer with 79 international goals, surpassing the legendary Pele record.

This will be Neymar’s fourth FIFA World Cup appearance after previously playing in Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022. Across those tournaments, he scored eight goals and provided four assists.

Several Brazil stars publicly supported Neymar’s inclusion. Barcelona forward Raphinha described him as “the player who can lead Brazil to a sixth World Cup title,” while captain Marquinhos also pushed for his return to the squad.

Meanwhile, Chelsea forward Joao Pedro was surprisingly left out despite an impressive season at club level. Richarlison also missed the cut, while Rodrygo, Eder Militao and Estevao were unavailable due to injuries.

Neymar has scored four goals and provided two assists in the Brazilian Serie A this season following his return from surgery earlier this year. While he may no longer be at the peak of his career, Brazil hope his experience can make a difference as they chase a record-extending sixth World Cup trophy in North America.
