Dhaka, Bangladesh – August 18, 2026:<\/strong> Bangladesh is preparing a dedicated Women Bus Service<\/strong> in Dhaka aimed at making public transport safer and more comfortable for female passengers. The service will be run by BRTC, with women serving as drivers, conductors and helpers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative follows a directive issued by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on March 2, when he instructed the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry to introduce a separate bus service for women in the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the new Women Bus Service?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to an official government handout, BRTC has already begun preparations for the special service. Unlike ordinary buses, the planned service is intended to be fully operated by women<\/strong>, including drivers, conductors and helpers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government says the initiative will improve women\u2019s safety while creating jobs in the transport sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government has also approved awareness slogans focusing on women’s safety, mobility, empowerment and economic participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which routes will the buses operate on?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is where an important clarification is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government has not yet officially announced the final routes for the newly planned women-only BRTC service.<\/strong> Online reports listing specific routes for the new service remain unconfirmed by the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BRTC already operates or lists women’s services on several routes. Its official passenger-service information includes routes such as Mohammadpur\u2013Jigatala\u2013Science Lab\u2013Motijheel<\/strong>, as well as women’s services from Mirpur-12 and Mirpur-10 toward Kamalapur<\/strong>. The BRTC website also lists services involving Taltola, Coca-Cola and Rampura-Banasree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Separately, BRTC officials have previously identified nine routes associated with women’s bus services, including Banasree\u2013Motijheel, Mirpur\u2013Kalyanpur\u2013Motijheel, Mirpur-12\u2013Motijheel, Mohammadpur\u2013Motijheel, Narayanganj\u2013Motijheel, Demra\u2013Motijheel, Rupnagar\u2013Agargaon\u2013Motijheel, Taltola\u2013Kalabagan\u2013Motijheel and Kallyanpur\u2013Motijheel<\/strong>. However, these should not automatically be treated as the final routes for the newly announced 2026 expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is the initiative important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Women in Dhaka frequently depend on buses for commuting to workplaces, educational institutions and other destinations. However, overcrowding, harassment, poor service and uncertainty over bus schedules remain major concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A discussion organised by the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority’s Bus Route Rationalisation Project and the Bangladesh Nari Sangbadik Kendra highlighted continuing safety and harassment concerns faced by women using public transport. Speakers stressed that separate buses alone would not solve the wider problem unless Dhaka develops a comprehensive, safe and women-friendly transport system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means the new service could provide an important additional option, but its success will depend on reliable schedules, sufficient buses, proper stops, trained staff and regular monitoring<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new opportunity for women drivers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most significant aspects of the initiative is the plan to have women behind the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government says the buses will be operated by female drivers, conductors and helpers. That could create new employment opportunities while challenging the traditional perception that commercial driving is primarily a male profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative therefore has two objectives: improving women’s mobility and increasing women’s participation in the transport workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government has announced the service, but it has not yet confirmed the final routes or schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women looking for existing BRTC women’s services should therefore check the latest information from BRTC before travelling, rather than relying on social media posts or outdated route lists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
