The BRICS Summit 2026 New Delhi wrapped up on Sunday after two days at Bharat Mandapam, and it produced something the bloc did not manage earlier this year: full agreement. Leaders adopted a joint declaration unanimously on the first day of the two-day summit, despite divisions among members over the wars in Iran and Ukraine. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the meeting. Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian were among the leaders who travelled to New Delhi, along with delegations from Brazil, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. The optics were part of the point. Photographs of Xi, Putin and Modi shaking hands and smiling together became the defining image of the summit. Trade war language, without naming anyone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The leaders voiced serious concern about the rise of unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures which distort trade and are inconsistent with WTO rules, and warned that protectionism disguised as environmental policy threatens to reduce global trade and disrupt supply chains. The quiet money story: local currencies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The de-dollarisation debate did not produce a BRICS currency, and nobody seriously expected one. What it produced was plumbing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The leaders acknowledged the work of the BRICS Payment Task Force on cross-border interoperability of payment and messaging channels, and on trade settlement using BRICS local currencies, while noting there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Two smaller items may matter more to ordinary businesses. West Asia: restraint, but no names<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On Palestine the language was firmer. Leaders reaffirmed support for a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital, and expressed firm opposition to the forced displacement of Palestinians from the Occupied Palestinian Territory. They also expressed serious concern over attacks on civilian infrastructure and on nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards, and stressed that trade, supply chains and energy flows through the region must stay open. pmindia<\/a>pmindia<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Terrorism and the UN reform demand<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The bloc condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April 2025, in which 26 people were killed, and rejected double standards in counter-terrorism. pmindia<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On global governance, the ask is familiar but louder. BRICS reiterated support for comprehensive reform of the UN, including the Security Council, to increase the representation of developing countries, with China and Russia reiterating support for the aspirations of Brazil and India to play a greater role. AI, health and the practical wins<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On health, the outcomes are concrete: a BRICS Integrated Early Warning System sub-working group for mass infectious diseases, the launch of the BRICS Mission for Healthy Lifestyle, and a network of mental health centres of excellence coordinated by NIMHANS.
