Why Did the Government Raise Prices?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The government says the conflict in the Middle East has pushed up world fuel prices and shipping costs since March 2026. According to the Energy and Mineral Resources Division, international fuel prices have more than doubled since then. However, the government kept local prices unchanged for several months to protect consumers. (Source: The Business Standard<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This had a heavy cost. Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) lost about Tk22,875.66 crore between March and August 2026. At current world prices, BPC is losing around Tk89 on every litre of diesel, which adds up to about Tk109 crore every day. The government also says the Tk20 increase will cut BPC’s yearly losses by about Tk10,000 crore. In other words, consumers are not paying the full rise in world prices. Is the Strait of Hormuz Behind the Bangladesh Fuel Price Hike?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Partly, but not fully. Many people believe the Bangladesh fuel price hike happened only because of trouble in the Strait of Hormuz. That is not the whole picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Energy Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku told Parliament in April 2026 that about 20 to 23 percent of Bangladesh’s imported fuel oil normally passes through the Strait of Hormuz. However, crude oil is a different story. Bangladesh imports around 1.3 to 1.5 million tonnes of crude oil every year from Saudi Arabia and the UAE for the Eastern Refinery. At the same time, about half of the country’s refined fuel comes through government-to-government deals with countries such as Kuwait, Malaysia, China, the UAE, Indonesia, Thailand, Oman and India. The Red Sea Detour That Cost Tk66 Crore<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Red Sea route has also hurt Bangladesh directly. Because of security risks near Bab el-Mandeb, Bangladesh Shipping Corporation’s tanker MT Ninemia had to sail around Africa. A trip that normally takes 13 to 15 days took about 50 days. (Source: The Daily Star<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Much Fuel Does Bangladesh Have?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In July, the Energy Ministry said the country had about 344,000 tonnes of diesel, enough for around 31 days. Octane stock covered 36 days, while petrol and jet fuel covered 20 days each. Record Fuel Import Bill<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What It Means for Ordinary People<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
