The Academy announced Thursday that vampire period horror film \u2018Sinners\u2019 smashed the all-time Oscars record with 16 nominations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the AFP report, director Ryan Coogler’s blues-inflected drama set in the 1930s segregated US South received nominations in nearly every category, including Best Picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It broke the previous record of 14, jointly held by \u2018All About Eve,\u2019 \u2018Titanic\u2019 and \u2018La La Land.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The tally included a best actor nomination for Michae;l B. Jordan, who plays twins battling supernatural forces and racists, plus everything from screenplay to score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018Sinners\u2019 also picked up a nomination for best casting, the first new category to be added to Hollywood\u2019s most prestigious awards in more than two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018One Battle After Another\u2019 came in second place with 13 nods including best picture, best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and best director for Paul Thomas Anderson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But its female lead, 25-year-old newcomer Chase Infiniti, was surprisingly snubbed by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Both of the top two nomination getters came from Warner Bros, the movie studio that is currently the target of a bidding war between Netflix and Paramount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Guillermo del Toro\u2019s monster epic \u2018Frankenstein,\u2019 Timothee Chalamet\u2019s ping-pong drama \u2018Marty Supreme\u2019 and Norwegian arthouse favorite \u2018Sentimental Value\u2019 each bagged nine nominations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018Hamnet,\u2019 a period drama in which William Shakespeare and his wife struggle to cope with the loss of their son in plague-ravaged Elizabethan England, secured eight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The nominations set the stage for the 98th Oscars ceremony on March 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DiCaprio, Chalamet and Jordan will battle for the best actor Oscar, along with Ethan Hawke for Broadway period drama \u2018Blue Moon,\u2019 and Wagner Moura from Brazilian political thriller \u2018The Secret Agent.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For best actress, Buckley will compete with Emma Stone playing an alien — or is she? — in conspiracy theorist drama \u2018Bugonia,\u2019 Renate Reinsve in \u2018Sentimental Value,\u2019 Kate Hudson in quirky music biopic \u2018Song Sung Blue,\u2019 and Rose Byrne as a struggling mom in indie hit \u2018If I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recently appointed Academy president Lynette Howell Taylor opened the early-morning announcement in Los Angeles with a warning about the threat of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
