Match Report

ARSENAL won 1-0 against West Ham United as they took the lead in the 83rd minute through a close range shot from Leandro Trossard with a right footed shot from an assist by Martin Odegaard to make it 0-1. It was Trossard’s first goal for Arsenal in 2026 but has surely given Arsenal a firm hand on the Premier League title in front of a capacity crowd of over 60,000 at the London Stadium. The celebration by Arsenal was meaningful as the players’ knew it was key victory.

West Ham United scored in the 90th+5 minute through a Callum Wilson shot but the goal was ruled out after VAR decision foul on David Raya. West Ham United are now truly in relegation trouble if Tottenham Hotspur win tomorrow night against Leeds United.

It was 46 years to the day since West Ham United beat Arsenal 1-0 in the FA Cup at the old Wembley thanks to a header from non other than Sir Trevor Brooking who was unveiled fore the game to reminisce of the 1980 Final but it was not to be today.

West Ham United had lost thirty eight Premier League games against Arsenal – they’ve only lost more often against Liverpool (thirty nine times), while the Gunners have only beaten Everton more (forty times). Arsenal had won their last two away league games against West Ham United, winning 6-0 in 2023-24 and 5-2 last season.

In English league history, only West Bromwich Albion had scored five or more goals in three consecutive away games against an opponent (against Birmingham between 1957 and 1960). Arsenal won the reverse fixture 2-0 against West Ham United in October 2025 at the Emirates Stadium.

They’ve completed the Premier League double over the Hammers twelve times previously, with only Manchester United doing so more against an opponent (sixteen times against Aston Villa, fourteen times against Everton).

West Ham United were unbeaten in their last six home Premier League matches (won three, drawn three), last having a longer unbeaten run on home soil between September 2015 and April 2016 in their final season at Upton Park (fifteen games). Arsenal had scored the opening goal in the opening ten minutes of each of their last two Premier League matches, netting in the 9th minute against both Newcastle United and Fulham both at home.

They haven’t done that in three games in a row since September – October 2002 against Leeds United, Sunderland and Everton. West Ham United had lost all five of their home London derbies in the Premier League this season.

No team in English league history have ever lost six home games against fellow London teams in a season. Arsenal had scored twenty seven goals via set pieces in the Premier League this season, more than any other side, with their seventeen from corners also the most by a team in a season ever.

West Ham United, meanwhile, have conceded the most corner goals (fifteen) and only Bournemouth (twenty-five) had conceded more from set pieces than the Hammers (twenty-three). Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka had been involved in more Premier League goals against West Ham United than any other opponent (five goals, four assists), with these nine involvements coming in his last eight appearances against them.

Arsenal’s Viktor Gyökeres has scored nine goals in his last dozen Premier League appearances, the most of any player in this period (from the last day in January 2026 onwards). His conversion rate this time is 47%, compared to just 15% across his first twenty-one matches (five goals from thirty-three shots).

Jarrod Bowen for the Hammers has seven assists across his last six home Premier League appearances for West Ham United, which make up his total home assists for 2025-26. Only Paolo Di Canio (nine in 1999-00) and Eyal Berkovic (eight in both 1997-98 and 1998-99) have assisted more home goals in a season for the Hammers.

West Ham United came into the game off the back of two wins against Everton (home) 2-1 and Wolverhampton Wanderers (home) 4-0, two draws against Crystal Palace (away) 0-0 and Leeds United FA Cup 6th Round (home) 2-2 lost of penalties 2-4 and two defeats against Aston Villa (away) 0-2 and Brentford (away) 0-3 last time out.

Arsenal the lead leaders came into the game off the back of three wins against Newcastle United (home) 1-0, Fulham (home) 3-0 and Atletico Madrid Champions League Semi-Final 2nd Leg (home) 1-0 last time out, two draws against Atletico Madrid Champions League Semi-Final 1st Leg (away) 1-1 and Sporting Lisbon Champions League Quarter-Final 2nd Leg (home) 0-0 and two defeats against Manchester City (away) 1-2 and AFC Bournemouth (home) 1-2.

West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo started with a 3-4-2-1 formation with Mads Hermansen in goal, then a back three of Axel Disasi, Jean-Clair Todibo then Konstantinos Mavropanos then a four man midfielder with two wing backs in Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Tomas Soucek, Mateus Fernandes and El hadji Malick Diouf then two attacking midfielders in captain Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville and Taty Castellanos up front

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta started with a 4-3-3 formation with David Raya in goal, then a back four of Ben White, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Riccardo Calafiori  then a three man midfielder of Eberechi Eze, Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly then three attackers in captain Bukayo Saka, Viktor Gyokeres and Leandro Trossard up front.

Arsenal kicked off the first half defending the goal behind where the Gunners fans were seated. Arsenal wore a changed strip of cream shirts, with claret shorts and socks.  The visitors started well with the Gunners making a fast start to the London derby. Arsenal had won 5-2 an 6-0 in their last two visits to the London Stadium. It was a cold afternoon in East London with Arsenal coming into the game 2 points ahead of Manchester City after yesterdays results.

Arsenal went close in the 8th minute as Leonardo Trossard found Ricardo Calafiori who shot left footed on target but Konstantinos Mavropanos blocked his shot and ball went out for a corner.  From the corner Trossard headed twice on target but Mads Hermansen denied him once and then he headed against the woodwork in the 9th and 10th minutes.

Both Arsenal corners caused havoc for the Hammers so the home side needed to be careful after heavy Arsenal pressure. If Arsenal scored in the opening twenty minutes West Ham United were going o struggle to get back into the game. The Hammers have been unbeaten at the London Stadium since a loss to Nottingham Forest back in January.

In the 13th minute with Arsenal’s next attack Ricardo Calafiori fired a left footed shot wide of the target from 22 yards out. Arsenal last lost at the London Stadium when Declan Rice scored the winning goal against the Gunners now he is an Arsenal player.

Arsenal were awarded a free kick in the 21st minute after Wan-Bissaka fouled Trossard. Declan Rice took the free kick which was headed on target by Calafiori with a glancing header but Mavropanos cleared the ball off the line in the 22nd minute.

West Ham United went close with a Diouf left-footed effort on goal in the 27th minute. Ben White left the field injured in the 28th minute and was replaced by Martin Zubimendi. Declan Rice went to right back after the substitution with Zubimendi going straight into midfield.

Zubimendi was fouled by Taty Castellanos on the edge of the West Ham United penalty and was yellow carded for the challenge by referee Christophe Kavanagh in the 34th minute.  Arsenal free kick was taken by Eberechi Eze but his right footed effort was blocked by the West Ham wall in the 35th minute.

It was tense for the Hammers fans as Arsenal edged the play after 35 minutes of the game. In the 36th minute Crysencio Summerville came forward and shot right footed but his effort went wide of the far post after a key opportunity for West Ham evaporated.

In the 37th minute Crysencio Summerville and Gabriel clashed with a challenge with both players going at full tilt and the West Ham attacker was yellow carded in the 38th minute for the challenge.

West Ham United went close in the 45th minute with a fabulous header by Taty Castellanos with a powerful header from an assist by Wan-Bissaka but David Raya made a top save to deny the Hammers an opening goal. There was three minutes added time at the end of the first half as the teams went in level at 0-0 at the interval.

West Ham United kicked off the second half with score at 0-0. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta replaced Ricardo Calafiori with Cristian Mosquera in the 46th minute so Declan Rice went back into midfield for the second half.

In the 49th minute both Taty Castellanos and Jarrod Bowen had shots on target but both efforts were stopped by Arsenal. Arsenal came forward in the 52nd minute through captain Bukayo Saka saw a left footed shot fired high and wide of the target.

Arsenal seemed rather uncomfortable after ten minutes of the second half as the Hammers started to come back into the game slowly but steadily. Mikel Arteta for some reason had left Martin Odegaard on the bench when he was seriously needed on the field.  Saka saw anaother shot from outside the penalty area fired high over the cross bar in the 58th minute.

Declan Rice took a corner in the 60th minute but West Ham cleared the danger quickly. Another Arsenal free kick in the 63rd minute after Rice had over run the ball and asked to be fouled. The Arsenal midfielder picked himself up and took the free kick deep into the West Ham penalty area but Mosquera had fouled in the build up. Bowen saw a right-footed shot from outside the Arsenal penalty area blocked in the 65th minute.

West Ham United brought on Pablo for in the 67th minute for Taty Castellanos. Arsenal brought on Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz for Eberechi Eze and Martin Zubimendi in the 67th minute. Todibo was yellow carded in the 68th minute for foul on Odegaard who had only just come on.

Rice took the free kick but West Ham United cleared the danger after initial chaos in the penalty area during which time Pablo handled but was lying flat on the floor as it was impossible for the West Ham player to get out of the way so nothing was awarded in favour of Arsenal after a VAR review.

With twenty minutes remaining it was all to play for with the Premier league title on the line between Arsenal and Manchester City and a relegation tussle between West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur for the last relegation place.

Bukayo Saka was yellow carded in the 77th minute for foul on Crysencio Summerville. West Ham United went close to a winner in the 78th minute as David Raya saved from Mateus Fernandes to deny the home side a goal. It was a top save by the Spaniard. Cristian Mosquera was yellow carded in the 79th minute.

Arsenal replaced Bukayo Saka with Noni Madueke in the 80th minute.  Arsenal took the lead in the 82nd minute through a close range shot from Leandro Trossard with a right footed shot from an assist by Martin Odegaard to make it 0-1. It was Trossard’s first goal for Arsenal in 2026.

West Ham United scored in the 90th+5 minute through a Callum Wilson shot but the goal was ruled out after VAR decision foul on David Raya.

Arsenal saw out the victory 1-0 which gave them a five point lead over Manchester City. City have three games remaining against Crystal Palace (home), AFC Bournemouth (away) and Aston Villa (home) whilst Arsenal have two to play against Burnley (home) and Crystal Palace (away).

The Premier league title is surely heading to the red half of North London!

West Ham United losing meant the other sides at the bottom of the table with 43 points are relatively safe now including Leeds United who face Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow night.
