Dhaka, October 11, 2026: Bangladesh temple vandalism is back in focus after vandals damaged Durga Puja idols in Kushtia on Friday. Living Arcade reviewed ten incidents reported in 2026. We confirmed eight of them through at least two news outlets. In all eight, police have not confirmed a communal motive. Also, in most of them, the culprits remain unknown.
Here is what happened at each temple, what police did, and what the reports say about possible motives.
Bangladesh Temple Vandalism in 2026: Key Facts
The eight cases took place in eight districts between February and October. Most happened at night. Reports show arrests in only one case, in Dinajpur. There, a land dispute sits at the center of the complaint.
Temple Vandalism in Bangladesh: Case by Case
Faridpur Town, February 3
Unknown people damaged five idols at the Malopara Sarbojanin Sri Sri Ma Kali Temple in Faridpur town, The Daily Star and Prothom Alo reported. It happened between about 12:30am and 4:30am, after a seven-day religious event ended.
The vandals broke the hands of three idols and the face of a Ganga idol. They also smashed a Gour-Nitai idol into pieces. Later that morning, police and an army team visited the temple.
According to the temple committee president, vandals struck the temple on the same day last year too. Back then, CCTV helped identify the culprit. This year, however, the temple’s three cameras were not working. Kotwali Police Station OC Md Shahidul Islam said police are checking who did it and why.
Bauphal, Patuakhali, February 28
Around 9:30pm on February 28, a local tea seller found the broken head of a Kali idol at the Sri Sri Shitala-Kalimata Temple in Bauphal. Prothom Alo and The Daily Star both reported it.
The temple committee president filed a case against unknown people the same night, OC Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman confirmed. Meanwhile, locals said the century-old temple had never seen a communal incident before. They believe outsiders planned the act to create unrest. However, police have not confirmed this.
Rangunia, Chattogram, April 9
On the night of April 9, intruders entered the Ma Magadheshwari Temple in Rangunia’s Pomra union. According to Jago News and The Daily Star, they broke the idol and took its gold ornaments. They also damaged furniture at a nearby Shiva temple.
After that, police inspected both temples. According to The Daily Star, police recorded a case. OC Md Arman Hossain said an investigation is under way.
Madhabpur, Habiganj, April 17
In the early hours of April 17, unknown people broke at least seven idols at the Sri Sri Gopal Temple in Uttar Shahpur, The Daily Star reported. The temple’s female attendant said they called on her to open the door. When she refused, they kicked it open.
The committee president then filed a general diary (GD). A GD is a formal police record of an incident, not a criminal case. OC Sohel Rana said early findings suggest the intruders came to steal. Similarly, Daily Inqilab reported that police believe they broke the idols after failing to steal anything.
Birganj, Dinajpur, April 19
This case stands apart because a land dispute sits at its center. On April 19, a group entered an indigenous burial ground and cremation site at Sonka Christian Para in Birganj. According to a case statement cited by The Business Standard, the group allegedly cut trees and broke a Kali idol.
A community member then filed a case against 14 named people and about 200 unnamed others. By April 21, police had arrested two suspects, Additional Superintendent of Police Anwar Hossain said.
Local residents say their community has used about 93 decimals of government land for generations. They accuse land grabbers of trying to take it. In addition, AsiaNews and EWTN News linked the incident to this land dispute. So the reports do not show that religion alone drove it.
Pirojpur Municipal Crematorium, June 1
Between about 3am and 3:30am on June 1, intruders entered the Kali temple at Pirojpur’s municipal crematorium. According to bdnews24.com and the Daily Observer, they broke a Shiva idol and burned parts of it. They also broke the gate and took the donation box and cremation tools.
Pirojpur Sadar OC Mohammad Shariful Islam said police first believed the motive was theft. However, he added that police are also checking for other reasons.
Mokamtala, Bogura, June 12
On June 13, devotees found broken idols at three temples in Kanchgari, in Bogura’s Mokamtala upazila. The Daily Star and The Business Standard reported the incident. According to temple committees, someone broke four to five idols on the night of June 12.
However, Shibganj Police Station OC Shahinuzzaman said the idols looked as if someone broke them days earlier. The temples stand in open fields, far from homes. Meanwhile, a local Puja council leader called it a communal provocation and demanded a fair probe.
Kumarkhali, Kushtia, October 9
The latest case happened on the night of October 8. According to the temple committee, someone broke through the bamboo fence of the Khoyerchara Sarbojanin Matri Mandir after 2am. They damaged idols made for the coming Durga Puja.
Prothom Alo and The Business Standard counted three damaged idols, while The Daily Star reported four. The vandals broke the heads of the Ganesh and Lakshmi idols and part of Durga’s lion.
Kumarkhali OC Jamal Uddin said two groups have a dispute over the temple committee. There is also a local land dispute, so police are investigating with both in mind. Unfortunately, the CCTV cameras recorded nothing, because temple members had removed them that night to protect them from rain. Since then, officials have placed police at the temple.
What Police Say About Bangladesh Temple Vandalism Motives
Across the eight cases, police have not confirmed a communal motive. Instead, the reports point to other possible reasons. Valuables went missing in Rangunia and Pirojpur, and police suspect a failed theft in Madhabpur. In Dinajpur and Kushtia, police are looking at local disputes.
In Faridpur town, Bauphal and Bogura, police have not named any motive yet. Still, this does not rule out religious hatred. Several temple leaders said the incidents left local Hindu families afraid. Until police finish their work, the full reasons will stay unclear.
