Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has been elected Bangladesh’s 23rd president after defeating Oli Ahmed in the country’s first contested presidential election in nearly 35 years.

In 2013 its registration was cancelled. Its top leaders were executed. It was banned outright in 2024. Three years later Jamaat-e-Islami is the official opposition in Bangladesh’s parliament.

Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office, triggering the constitutional process for appointing an acting president and electing a new head of state within 90 days.

Jamaat-e-Islami has officially informed Bangladesh’s Election Commission about the expulsion of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam following an internal investigation into alleged moral misconduct. The party has also requested the EC to take the necessary legal and electoral steps.
