Bangladesh President Resignation: Shahabuddin Steps Down

DHAKA, Bangladesh – Bangladesh President Resignation has officially become the country’s latest major political development after President Mohammed Shahabuddin submitted his resignation on Friday (July 24) at the Parliament Secretariat.

Speaker to Serve as Acting President

Under Bangladesh’s Constitution, the Parliament Speaker will perform the duties of the president until lawmakers elect a new head of state.

Shahabuddin’s Presidency

Mohammed Shahabuddin assumed office as Bangladesh’s 22nd President on April 24, 2023. His five-year constitutional term was scheduled to continue until April 2028.

His presidency coincided with one of Bangladesh’s most eventful political periods, including the student-led mass uprising, the fall of the Awami League government, the interim administration, and the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

During his tenure, he also became the first Bangladeshi president to administer the oath of office to three different prime ministers within a relatively short period.
