Trump Assassination Suspect Cole Allen Agrees to Stay in Custody

By Living Arcade News Desk | April 30, 2026

Cole Tomas Allen, the 31-year-old California man accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump at the White House Correspondents Association Dinner, has agreed to remain in federal detention while his case proceeds through the courts.

At his detention hearing on Thursday, Allen’s attorney confirmed that the suspect conceded to remain detained pending further legal proceedings in his case. The government had argued that Allen poses a grave risk of danger to the public for allegedly seeking to carry out an attack at the annual dinner. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 11.

What Happened at the Washington Hilton

Shortly before 8:40 p.m. on April 25, 2026, Allen approached a security checkpoint on the Terrace Level of the Washington Hilton hotel leading to the ballroom and ran through a magnetometer holding a long gun. A Secret Service officer, who was wearing a ballistic vest, was shot once in the chest.

Allen, a California native, was carrying a shotgun, a pistol, and knives when he was tackled by law enforcement after the gunfire inside the hotel, where thousands of journalists as well as President Trump and members of his Cabinet were gathered for the annual dinner. Allen did not reach the ballroom where the dinner was underway, and the Secret Service member struck in the incident is expected to recover.

Trump, who had been seated at the head table on the stage, was surrounded by Secret Service agents within seconds of the shots being fired and was later escorted off the stage. Many of the roughly 2,600 attendees took cover under their tables.

A Premeditated Attack Weeks in the Making

Federal prosecutors have described the assault as far from impulsive. Court filings state that Allen repeatedly checked media websites to monitor Trump’s schedule, watched live footage of the presidential motorcade, and sent pre-written emails to his family moments before the attack. Prosecutors also released evidence showing Allen armed inside his hotel room roughly 30 minutes before the incident, carrying multiple weapons including a shotgun, pistol, knives, daggers, pliers, and wire cutters.

According to court documents, Allen made a reservation at the Washington Hilton on April 6, 2026, for three nights beginning April 24. He traveled by train from near Los Angeles to Chicago before boarding another train to Washington, arriving in the District on April 24 and checking in to the hotel that same day.

In a note sent to family members approximately 10 minutes before the attack, Allen said it was his duty to target Trump administration officials, apologized to his parents, and stated he planned to carry out the shooting because he vehemently opposed the Trump administration. He also said he planned to use buckshot to minimize civilian casualties.

A manifesto attributed to Allen criticized Trump administration policies and referred to himself as the “Friendly Federal Assassin.” The document stated that he was no longer willing to permit what he described in deeply inflammatory terms as the actions of the current administration, without naming Trump directly.

The Charges and What Allen Faces

Allen was charged with three criminal counts: attempting to assassinate the President of the United States, transportation of a firearm and ammunition in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony, and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence.

Allen faces a maximum life sentence if found guilty of attempted assassination of the president, along with a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years consecutive to any other sentence imposed. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro has indicated that additional charges may follow.

Prosecutors Call It an Anti-Democratic Act

In a court filing, prosecutors described the incident as a planned attack of unfathomable malice that risked the lives of hundreds of people whose only transgression was attending an annual event celebrating the media and featuring the President of the United States, calling it, at its core, an anti-democratic act of political violence.

The Third Apparent Attempt on Trump

The incident marks the third apparent attempt on Trump’s life since 2024, following the July 2024 attempt near Butler, Pennsylvania, where Trump was wounded in the ear, and a September 2024 incident at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida. It also carries historical weight: the Washington Hilton was the same location where John Hinckley Jr. attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981.

The case now moves toward a preliminary hearing on May 11, where the full weight of the federal charges against Allen is expected to be laid out before the court.
