Mumbai Red Alert Heavy Rain: Residents Told to Stay Indoors as Flood Risk Grows

Mumbai Red Alert Heavy Rain remains the biggest concern across India’s financial capital after continuous downpours flooded roads, disrupted transport, and forced authorities to ask residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai, warning that more heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected. Officials say several parts of the city recorded over 300 millimetres of rain during the last 24 hours, raising the risk of flooding and landslides.

Over 300mm of Rainfall Recorded Across Mumbai

According to city officials, multiple areas received more than 200mm of rainfall, while some locations crossed the 300mm mark.

The highest rainfall was recorded in:

• Vikhroli West Building Proposal Office – 310.6 mm
• Colaba Pumping Station – 306.6 mm
• Thakur Nagar Municipal School, Vikhroli – 301.8 mm

Many other areas, including Malabar Hill, Powai, Bhandup, Andheri, Jogeshwari, Goregaon, Colaba, and Mandvi, also experienced rainfall exceeding 200mm.

Authorities Urge Residents to Stay Home

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised residents to remain indoors unless travel is necessary.

Citizens have also been asked to:

• Follow official weather warnings.
• Avoid low-lying and coastal areas.
• Contact the BMC emergency helpline 1916 during emergencies.

Authorities warned that dangerous high tides could worsen flooding, with tides expected to reach 4.19 metres on Sunday afternoon and 3.51 metres early Monday morning.

Transport Services Continue with Minor Disruptions

Despite the severe weather, Mumbai Metro and BEST bus services continued operating normally on Sunday morning.

However, commuters reported delays on suburban railway services because of waterlogging and heavy rainfall.

On Saturday, flooding on railway tracks temporarily disrupted Central and Western Railway services, while a technical fault briefly affected Metro Line 2A operations.

Neighbouring Regions Also Affected

The relentless rainfall has also impacted Thane, Navi Mumbai, Palghar, and Pune, where flooding and landslides have damaged roads and forced emergency evacuations in some locations.

Disaster response teams remain on standby as local authorities monitor the weather closely.

More Heavy Rain Expected

The IMD forecasts additional heavy to very heavy rainfall across Mumbai and nearby districts throughout Sunday.

Strong winds between 55 and 65 km/h are also expected, increasing the possibility of falling trees, damaged infrastructure and further transport disruption.

Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel until weather conditions improve.
